Mountaineering Scotland Coaching Workshops
In partnership with the BMC and Mountaineering Ireland, we have developed a series of coaching workshops for climbers interested in developing their climbing skills as part of their coach education pathway; they are modules required for the Climbing Coach Award Scheme which operated by Mountain Training. However, they are useful in their own right as individual workshops for more advanced climbers wishing to enhance their own climbing.
Although there is inevitably some coaching methodology, they are primarily focused on climbing skills from grassroots to elite level standards and can be attended by anyone aged 14+.
A team of Mountaineering Scotland trained and endorsed Providers deliver the workshops across Scotland.

The FUNdamentals of Climbing
This is a series of three workshops which need to be attended sequentially when undertaking the Coach Award Scheme. They focus on three different aspects of climbing skill: technique, balance, and movement as follows:
- The FUNdamentals of Climbing 1: Movement
This first workshop focuses on skills that underpin climbing-specific movement and is required as part of the training for the Foundation Coach Award.
- The FUNdamentals of Climbing 2: Technique
This workshop transfers the skills learnt in FUNdamentals 1 to be able to better use a variety of climbing-specific techniques, particularly those required to climb steeper routes and is required as part of the training for the Development Coach Award. Prior attendance on a FUNdamentals 1 workshop is required to be able to undertake this workshop.
- The FUNdamentals of Climbing 3: Advanced Technique & Movement
This workshop is much more advanced, investigating complex and dynamic movement. Attendees need to be able to on-sight 6b and boulder up to V3 comfortably to get the most from it.

Learn how to deliver Physical Training sessions with this Mountaineering Scotland workshop
This workshop is the first of two that are primarily aimed at any coach wishing to further their knowledge of physical training. While most gains for any climber will be found by developing their technique, tactics and mental approach, this workshop addresses how to create performance adaptation through physical training.
In terms of the LTPD model (Long Term Participant Development) covered in FUNdamentals 1, this course moves away from the ‘FUNdamentals stage’ onto the ‘Learning to Train stage’. However, this course covers the basic information required for a coach to have a fundamental understanding of the science behind, and practical application of, physical training.
By the end of the day you will be able to plan training sessions for your clients and groups.
The course is split into two parts:
- The morning covers the theory behind the body’s energy systems, anatomy and types of climbing training.
- The afternoon includes wall-based sessions, giving coaches a practical understanding of theory. Areas covered include body conditioning, strength, endurance and power/strength endurance.
