On 11th February, charity Above Adventure will welcome the public through the doors of the new state-of-the-art bouldering hall in Kilmarnock. The launch is the first chapter of an exciting story for Ayrshire in 2022, as the full Climbing Centre is due to open in later in the year. The centre is the first of its kind in Ayrshire.

The former Grange Church on Woodstock Street, in which the Centre is now based, has benefited from over £3.3 million of complex renovation, conservation and construction work. Now, the public will be able access the new facility for the first time – as the bouldering hall opens its doors just in time for half term.

Following a nine year fundraising, planning and construction journey, the Above Adventure team look forward to welcoming climbers, families, fitness enthusiasts and even those who have never climbed before – from all over Scotland and beyond.

Dean Pastulovic, Founder and Project Manager, said: “We know there’s been a lot of interest from the local community and climbers up and down the country, to find out when they can get their hands on our walls – literally! It’s a fantastic feeling to finally be at that stage, and for all the hard work from our partners and funders to be realised. We can’t wait to welcome everyone through the doors – it’s a proud moment for us, and yet it’s just the start”.

“It’s great to see the culmination of a lot of hard work over several years to get the first phase of the new wall open at the old Grange Church in Kilmarnock. This has been a priority project for Mountaineering Scotland as part of our facilities strategy, there being an obvious gap in provision in the south west of Scotland. We have worked closely with Above Adventure to support funding applications (particularly with Sportscotland Lottery) and have advised on the design in order to produce a Level 2 Regional Hub and we look forward to working with them to develop climbing at all levels in the area. In particular it will be great to see the first competitions hosted at Kilmarnock as part of the ClimbScotland national events. We look forward to a very productive partnership.”
